TORONTO — The Ontario Human Rights Commission says racism was a clear motive behind a number of attacks on Asian Canadian anglers across Ontario.

The commission has been studying several incidents in which they were physically or verbally assaulted.

“What is clear is that the simple activity of going fishing for some Asian Canadian anglers has taken on very disturbing racial overtones,” said chief commissioner Barbara Hall. “These incidents remind us that racism and racial discrimination exist in Ontario and show how harmful such events can be for all of us.”

The inquiry interviewed more than 30 people across Ontario who either experienced or witnessed incidents while fishing, mostly in the Lake Simcoe, Peterborough and the Rideau Locks area — all popular fishing spots.
