Harper government committed to rule of law
Letter, July 18.
Sandra Buckler, Prime Minister Stephen Harper's Director of Communications, has it all wrong. Harper and the G-8 have no intention of resolving the Middle East crisis. They are only interested in travel to other countries, the fine meals and doing things their way. To whom would they sell their armaments if not the protagonists? It is unfortunate that so many journalists, politicians and even your readers fail to understand what is happening in Lebanon.
In effect, all these so-called "terrorists," no matter where they are — India, the Middle East, Sri Lanka, etc. — are simply groups that are unable to combat the might of the powerful nations or entities within powerful nations struggling for recognition. Unfortunately, the rich and powerful nations demand all other nations do things as they wish. They demand democracy but only if the people elect someone with whom they agree. Canada, under Harper, denied the duly elected Palestinian government because Harper disagreed with Hamas — is that the rule of law?
Terrorism is the creation of the powerful nations They provide the armaments for other nations and only by using guerrilla or terrorist activity can the lesser groups do anything other than fold to the mighty.
Street gangs in our urban areas are an extension of this. Theysee the example of George Bush, Tony Blair and Harper as being the norm so why can't they, the street gangs, bully individuals and the weak?
It can't be wrong because that is the way the world leaders behave.
John E. Milnes, Brighton, Ont.
