Dear Mrs. Clarkson
As Iranian , We are pleased to be in part of a multi
culture community and aimed to keep it safe from any politic issue
because we believe we are together here to make a safe place and peace for
living .
On your March 17, 2004 interview with the C.B.C. Radio,
while speaking on the issue of visiting troops in the Middle East, you referred
to a place
as the “Arabian” Gulf.
In the spirit of this healthy dialogue, we would like to point out to an issue that is very
important to Iranians and Iranian-Canadians.. We would
like to mention
that the correct name “Persian Gulf ”.
All maps, Atlases, encyclopedia, international treaties and conventions under
the auspices of the United Nations, and finally, the Canadian foreign ministry
refer to it as the Persian Gulf when addressing the
location.
We are positive that the mislabeling was innocent slip,
which does happen to all of us
occasionally. But using wrong name without correction makes ongoing some
political issue.
In the recent decade, the Persian Gulf kingdoms have coveted and
contested several Iranian islands near the southern shores of Iran; this is the
context that makes the issue very charged for Iranians and
Iranian-Canadians.
In multi-cultural societies, through public debate,
research and protocol we can come to some understanding and progress.
On behalf of some Iranian –Canadians, We would very much appreciate your attention in this sensitive matter, while
addressing the location of the Persian Gulf.
Yours truly,
Saeed Soltanpour
